Schmidtsdrift is a small rural settlement and land-restitution community in the Siyancuma Local Municipality, within the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality of the Northern Cape. It lies beside the Vaal River along the N8 between Kimberley, Campbell and Griquatown, approximately 70 to 80 km west of Kimberley. The surrounding landscape combines riverbanks, open thornveld, grazing land, low sections of the Ghaap Plateau and former military and mining areas. The name Schmidtsdrift refers to a historic drift, or river crossing, through the Vaal River, although a fully documented account identifying the Schmidt after whom it was named could not be reliably verified. Historical records trace the area to at least 1827, when it was treated as Crown Trust Land occupied by Tswana-speaking Batlhaping and Griqua communities. Its position at a river crossing made it important to travellers, livestock farmers and transport routes between the Diamond Fields and the interior.
Schmidtsdrift’s history is strongly shaped by dispossession, military use and land restitution. The area became the Schmidtsdrift Native Reserve under the segregation-era land system, but more than 1,000 Batlhaping households were forcibly removed during 1968. The South African Defence Force later established a military training base there, and after Namibian independence, !Xun and Khwe former soldiers and their families were housed in a tent settlement at Schmidtsdrift. The original Batlhaping and Griqua communities successfully pursued restitution, and the Schmidtsdrift farm was transferred to their Communal Property Association in 2003.
Agriculture, community enterprises, public services and limited mining-related activity contribute to the local economy. The surrounding district supports cattle, sheep and goat farming, together with small-scale crop and community-garden projects where water and soil conditions permit.
