Durnacol is a small former mining settlement in the Dannhauser Local Municipality of northern KwaZulu-Natal’s Amajuba District. It lies south-west of Dannhauser and about 30 kilometres from Newcastle, amid open grassland, former colliery land, residential areas and working farms. The settlement’s quiet present-day character contrasts with the period when it was one of the region’s most active coal-mining communities.
The name Durnacol was formed from Durban Navigation Collieries, the company that began mining on the farm Spies in 1902. The operation was established to extract coal for maritime and industrial use and later became closely connected with South Africa’s iron and steel industry. Houses, workshops, offices, transport infrastructure and community facilities developed around the mine, creating a purpose-built colliery settlement.
Mining continued in the Durnacol area for almost a century, with the last shaft closing around 2001. At its height, the colliery employed thousands of workers and supported families from the surrounding district. Durnacol is also associated with one of the most serious disasters in South African mining history.
