Emgwenya, historically known as Waterval Boven, is a small railway and adventure-tourism town in the Emakhazeni Local Municipality of Mpumalanga’s Nkangala District. It stands on the edge of the Drakensberg Escarpment beside the Elands River, between Machadodorp and Mbombela along the N4. The original name Waterval Boven means “above the waterfall” and refers to the town’s position above the approximately 75-metre Elands River Falls. The present name Emgwenya means “place of the crocodile”. The settlement was established in 1895 as part of the Netherlands–South African Railway Company’s Eastern Line between Pretoria and Delagoa Bay, now Maputo.
Emgwenya developed as an important railway supply, maintenance and refuelling centre. Locomotives stopped here before negotiating the steep escarpment route, and railway workshops, residences, schools and businesses grew around the station.
