Isipingo is a densely settled residential, commercial and industrial town in the southern part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Situated about 19 kilometres south of central Durban, it lies close to the N2, R102 and the South Coast railway line. The wider area includes Isipingo Rail, Isipingo Hills, Lotus Park, Malukazi and Isipingo Beach, where the Siphingo River reaches the Indian Ocean.
The town takes its name from the Siphingo River. The name is thought to refer either to the intertwined cat-thorn shrubs once found in the area or to the river’s winding course. Isipingo developed on land associated with early colonial settler Dick King, who farmed in the district, operated a sugar mill and was buried locally after his death in 1871.
Sugar-cane cultivation strongly influenced Isipingo’s nineteenth-century development. Indian indentured labourers began arriving in Natal from 1860 and many worked on sugar estates in Isipingo and neighbouring districts, contributing permanently to the area’s cultural, religious and commercial character. The railway from Durban reached Isipingo in 1880, strengthening the transport of passengers, produce and industrial goods along the South Coast.
