Verulam is a historic residential, commercial and industrial town in the northern part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. It lies beside the uMdloti River, approximately 24 kilometres north of central Durban and close to the R102, N2 and King Shaka International Airport. Verulam was founded on 13 March 1850 by Wesleyan settlers associated with William Josiah Irons and the Christian Emigration and Colonisation Society. Many of the settlers came from the St Albans district in England, and the new settlement was named in honour of the Earl of Verulam, who was connected with that area. The town was established on the southern bank of the uMdloti River and became one of the earliest formal colonial settlements in Natal.
Agriculture and transport strongly influenced Verulam’s growth. Sugar cane eventually became the dominant crop across the surrounding district, while the arrival of Indian indentured labourers from the 1860s permanently enriched the town’s cultural, religious and commercial life. The railway between Mount Edgecombe and Verulam opened during the late nineteenth century, strengthening connections with Durban, nearby sugar estates and settlements farther along the North Coast.
Verulam developed into a culturally diverse town with churches, mosques, Hindu temples, schools, community institutions and a long-established trading centre. The historic Verulam Market began with fresh-produce stalls authorised by the town board in 1884 and remains closely associated with local commerce. Verulam has a warm, humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot, green and rainy, with regular showers, thunderstorms and periods of high humidity. Winters are generally mild, sunnier and considerably drier, although early mornings can occasionally be cool. Heavy summer rain may raise river levels and affect smaller roads, particularly around the uMdloti River and Hazelmere Dam catchment.
Hazelmere Dam lies a short drive from Verulam on the uMdloti River and forms an important regional water-storage facility. Nearby Mount Moreland is known for the seasonal arrival of large numbers of barn swallows, which roost in local reedbeds during the southern African summer.
