Wolmaransstad is an agricultural, commercial and administrative town in the Maquassi Hills Local Municipality, within North West’s Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality. It lies beside the N12 between Klerksdorp and Bloemhof, with regional roads connecting it to Schweizer-Reneke, Ottosdal, Makwassie and Leeudoringstad. Wolmaransstad is the principal administrative centre of Maquassi Hills and serves a wide farming and diamond-producing district. The settlement developed during the late nineteenth century along an important transport route towards the Kimberley diamond fields. Brothers W. and T.S. Leask opened a trading store in the area in 1876, around which a small community gradually formed. A decision to establish a town was taken in 1884, residential stands were surveyed from 1888 and Wolmaransstad was officially proclaimed on 16 February 1891. It was named after Jacobus M.A. Wolmarans, a member of the Executive Council of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek.
Wolmaransstad’s heritage reflects Barolong history, early Wesleyan missionary activity, Boer farming settlement, church development, transport and the growth of local government. Missionaries Samuel Broadbent and Thomas Hodgson worked among Barolong communities near present-day Witpoort during the 1820s. The Dutch Reformed congregation was established in 1888, and the prominent sandstone church whose foundation stone was laid in 1928 remains one of the town’s best-known landmarks.
