Delmas

Discover Delmas

Delmas is an agricultural, mining and commercial town in the Victor Khanye Local Municipality of Mpumalanga’s Nkangala District. It lies on the western Highveld near the Gauteng boundary, approximately midway between Springs, Bronkhorstspruit and eMalahleni. The N12 Maputo Corridor and regional railway network give the town an important position as the western gateway to Mpumalanga, while open farmland, grain silos, grassland and gently rolling plains define the surrounding landscape.

Delmas was established in 1907 when Frank Dumat laid out a settlement on the farm Witklip to serve the surrounding farming community. Municipal tourism information explains the name as a French expression referring to a small town, while another regional account associates it with Dumat’s description of the property as a small farm. The settlement expanded as shops, churches, agricultural businesses and public services were established beside the regional transport routes.

The town later became associated with an important chapter in South Africa’s struggle against apartheid. The Delmas Treason Trial involved 22 anti-apartheid activists and continued from the mid-1980s into 1989, becoming one of the country’s longest political trials. The Delmas Treason Trial Monument stands at the magistrate’s court precinct and commemorates the trialists and their contribution to the development of South Africa’s democracy.

Agriculture and mining form major parts of the local economy. Maize, wheat, soya beans, potatoes, vegetables and poultry are produced across the surrounding district, supported by grain storage, agricultural services, food processing and transport businesses. Coal mining is also significant, while trade, manufacturing, construction, logistics, finance, public services and renewable-energy development provide further employment. Delmas’s location near Gauteng and along the N12 strengthens its role as a distribution and service centre.

Delmas has a temperate Highveld summer-rainfall climate. Summers are generally warm, green and rainy, with afternoon thunderstorms and occasional hail, while winters are dry, sunny and considerably colder. Frost is common during winter mornings, and night-time temperatures can fall very low. The open countryside may experience strong winds and sudden storms, particularly during the warmer months.

The farming landscape around Delmas offers opportunities for scenic drives, cycling, running, rural photography and birdwatching along public and authorised routes. Delmas Golf Club provides a local recreational option, while wetlands, farm dams, grasslands and cultivated fields support waterbirds, grassland species and smaller animals. Visitors should obtain permission before entering working farms, private dams or mining property. Wildlife sightings naturally vary according to the season and environmental conditions.

Accommodation in Delmas includes Delmas Country Lodge, De Oude Hof Lodge, Delvegas Guest House and 4 Seam Guest House. Bokamoso Lodge and Conference Centre provides additional countryside accommodation in the nearby Sundra area. Visitors can enjoy meals at the restaurant and pub at Delmas Country Lodge, which serves breakfasts, lunches, dinners and country-style dishes. Bokamoso Lodge also offers meals to guests by arrangement, while the town centre contains further family restaurants, cafés and takeaway outlets.

Nearby attractions include the Delmas Treason Trial Monument, Delmas Golf Club, the agricultural landscapes of the western Mpumalanga Highveld and the seasonal cosmos displays found along regional roads during late summer. Longer outings can include Bronkhorstspruit Dam, Marievale Bird Sanctuary, Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, Cullinan, Springs and eMalahleni.
